Ask yourself one question.. How did they have such advanced knowledge, but yet, there is no evidence of any rise to such knowledge. Instead, for some reason, there's only unexplainable structures, which by today's standards, are still near impossible to build. Also, they only used this knowledge for building random, giant, and unexplainable buildings, and not much else. How and Why did they do these things. In my opinion, the knowledge must have belonged to a higher intelligence.

There is clear machine marks all over the world on these ancient stones/megaliths. Most of the ancient structures have been built using the same techniques. Coincidence, i think not. The sheer precision on a large number of these stones is also impossible without the use of some sort of technology. Take the site of Puma Punku for instance. The precision there is undeniable evidence of advanced machining.

Also, if you take into account all the ancient religions/texts and writings, they all describe Gods descending from the sky on flying flying chariots and burning shields of fire. Animals would run in fear, tree's would get blown over and there would be smoke and fire. And then all the cave painting of strange beings in what look like space suits and other artifacts which look exactly like modern aircraft's. When engineers made scale models of these aircraft looking artifacts, they flew with ease. They were perfectly aerodynamic. Another coincidence? I'm not so sure. Did they have the ability to fly, or witness other beings flying in crafts? Going by the collective evidence, i think so.

Yet more evidence of advanced knowledge is their understanding of the universe. They knew the earth was round, they knew how many planets were in our solar system and that they all rotate round the Sun. These ancient people were taught in all these skills by the astronauts. These astronauts were thought of as Gods because they displayed what appeared to be incredible abilities, but this was actually technology. The ancient people simply didn't know what technology was, so they thought they were divine. They were also limited in ways they could describe what they saw. This explains things like flying dragons and serpents which breathe fire. They knew lizards, serpents and snakes couldn't breathe fire, or fly, so why describe something like this? They must have been flying machines, and the fire they talk of, would have been the propulsion. Why else would they repeatedly refer to things flying, unless there were actually crafts in the air. I doubt they were just birds either.

The ancient writings of the Sumerians were one of the first writings ever to be discovered. They talk of beings coming from another planet to Earth for resources that they needed for their planet, as their atmosphere had depleted in their rise to technology. Which is also happening to us humans as we speak. We will also one day have to travel to other planets in search of resources. The Earth wont sustain us forever. These 'Gods' were known as the Annunaki. Do a little research on them if you haven't already. Very interesting stuff.

To finish, you're point about the vast distances that they would have had to conquer to reach Earth, may not be so hard for a civilization thousands, if not millions of years more advanced than us. Just because us humans don't know about it, doesn't mean its not possible. I believe we know very little in terms of what we have yet to discover.

Thanks.

Dear Dr Van Stone
What a relief to read a scientific analysis of this "2012 phenomenon" regarding real Maya documentation.
I am putting together a calendar for sale which takes a rationalist scientific and historical slant towards this issue. In 12 monthly plates, I'm trying to provide a summary of the major issues of European contact with Mesoamerican peoples, their civilisation, writing and translation, astronomy, the different Maya calendars, the Aztec SunStone, and then an analysis of some of the 'prophecies' of 2012. Each plate is accompanied by a small essay of about 500 words on each topic.
My aim is to provide an educational, but beautiful calendar which will help to rationalise and contribute to calming the 'debate', which I consider has been largely manufactured.
One of the key issues is whether in fact there is any Maya 2012 prophecy, and thus I am very interested in the Tortuguero Stela 6. I want to feature the image you have on your site as one of the 12 monthly plates.
Could you please inform me how I could obtain a high resolution digital copy of this sent to me by e-mail, what the costs would be, including royalties etc.?
My calendar will measure 30 x 30 cm (12" x 12") and is the first edition of an annual fine-art / special event calendar aimed at producing calm viewing pleasure with a bit of knowledge. It will be sold on the internet internationally, but I am based in Australia. This year, everything is running behind schedule and I will have a very limited print run. I will start with 1,000, and if demand warrants, will do another print run, probably at a maximum of 5,000. In my wildest dreams I can't imagine doing more than 10,000 sales this year, because of this later start.
I'd appreciate any help you can give me on obtaining this image, the more rapid the better.

Hope to hear from you soon

Regards

I always thought it's more like the end of calendar not the end of the world but this economic crisis doesn't look good to me and let's hope it won't turn out as bad as I see it. But the interesting thing may be if some turbulence happens next year because then Mayans will be right with their predictions of end. It may just come in the form that many would never believe. I really appreciate any efforts into digging ancient artifacts and exploring anything that may help us understand who we are and where are we going to. Looking forward to see this movie.

The term amateur is a badge of honor. It has as its origin the Latin amator ‘lover,’ which comes from amare ‘to love.’ Amateurs do what the do for the love of doing it, not for material compensation.
All my closest friends through the decades have been amateurs in this sense: an astronomer, a geologist, a numismatist, a philosopher, a theologian, and even a Mayanist.

Great blog! I particularly appreciated your comments on Palenque having been there recently. Your excellent book, "2012: Science and Prophecy of the Ancient Maya" is full of pictures, explanatory graphs and insights - all appreciated. I've shown it to lots of folks, kindling their interest in the Maya and reassuring some about 2012. Thanks.

I can't wait to see a "fair and balanced" film on 2012 with a scientific approach. What a refreshing antedote to the 2012 fearmongering frenzy. Your book on "2012: Science and Prophecy of the Ancient Maya" is great. I appreciate the beautiful pictures, explanatory drawings, highlights and insights that you provide. Truly the most beautiful and artistic FACTUAL book on 2012. -- AND I won't cash in my IRA before December 21, 2012! Thanks for the reassurance.

Fascinating information and a beautifully written blog, Mark. The right-hand glyph-piece with the 13.0.0.0 date appears to be integretto. Is that an illusion? Sometimes high relief appears sunken.

Dear Binkerd,
Thanks for your praise for my blog.
Sorry, I guess I have too much going on... What post are you referring to? I don't recall posting in Feb... Was it an answer to a comment, or what?
Look forward to hearing from you.
